Abstract

This study aimed to identify forms of iron in the soil of Wadi Al-Shati in southwest Libya, using sequential extraction according to the method of Sposito et al. (1982), to understand the distribution of soluble iron in water across six different areas and three soil depths. Samples were collected from the areas of (Ashkuda, Barak, Aqar, Qatta, Temsan, Tarout) at depths of 1, 2, and 3 meters. Five-gram soil samples were used, and the soluble iron was extracted in ion-free water, then its concentration was measured using an A.A.S. device. The results showed clear variation in soluble iron concentrations between the study areas and different depths. Ashkuda recorded the highest values of soluble iron at all depths, while Barak and Aqar had the lowest values, and Temsan and Qatta recorded intermediate values. The results also indicated that the distribution of soluble iron changes with depth due to differences in water movement and the physical and chemical conditions affecting iron redistribution in the soil profile. The study highlighted that forms of soluble iron in water are among the most environmentally important forms due to their high mobility.
